Dawn cruise was mad, decent turnout of 25 cars or so, met up at 6 in the AM, on Sunday.

Hit everywhere, g box, firewall, originally for a 2wd hilux, thought they would be the go...The 2.25 exhaust improved the midrange torque even more and made the throttle response even better than it was before.

Whenever im out and about im always keen to snap anything i see on the street that grabs my attention, mainly well styled street cars of those who kno whats up. Thought i'd start throwing them up on here to show a bit of the street scene and whats kickin around these days. Too many get caught up on whining about defects and worry about getting caught, you just gotta not worry and mod how you want, if you get done, clear it, then put your shit back on. I'm all for keeping the street scene alive. I love it when see tough cars roll by.

Spotted this Onevia hard parked on the main street of Lobethal a few weeks back. Belongs to a member of the 2P1S crew. Tough stance on Work Meisters, Half cage and a kit with a decent ride height to match. (Dont know what type of kit, im hopeless with naming kits)

Next car is one of my favourites to ever come out of japan, modified exactly how i would do it, factory kit, 18x9/10 just poking with perfect ride heights, twin 3 inch straight pipes. Even better, its manual and has been skidded.

Something about wagons just gets me hooked, they are more rare, and its cool to carry parts in the wagon version of the cars you mod for real driving, they just have mad character. Lawson's AE71 Panelvan got some steez by the way of lowering blocks and cut springs.
After getting around on my old supra 14x7's, it now rolls on AJPS Exclusive Gloss Black Performance Superlights in the angry 15x8 -4 sizing with Bridgestone RE001 195/50's. The RE001 is an amazing tyre which took out the performance tyre test in the latest Motor magazine against competition from the likes of Pirelli's P Zero and Continental's Sport Contact despite being over $50 cheaper per corner in a 215/45/17 sizing. Win.

Picked the car up this afternoon, front guard cut outs flared and molded to the rear and the front flared guards now all bogged and ready for a light sand and paint. Chucked some 210mm 6kg rear springs in down from the original 225mm 6kg's to better fill the guard, they still have a bit to sag. A 10mm spacer will find its way in there to make the rim sit dead flush with the guard line. Currently await more funds to fit up some JDM vented AE86 calipers. Will get some better pictures in the light at some stage!

I live out there... so don't go there.

Well the 71 has been off the road for 8 months now since i had a little 'accident' in the hills, when it was supposed to be for 2 at the most, but i guess with cars thats just how things go.
What was supposed to be a simple front end headlight change over to some JDM twin round headlights pulled from an AE70 in japan and the early style panels repainted to match the rest of the car, turned into a complete body work over and a finishing up of a few basic mods that the car needed badly.

When i bought it:

First mods, simple suspension set up, locker, clutch and wheels:

Crashed it, then went back together like so, complete with lip, headlights and chrome bars after the accident:

First up i wanted to run wider than my old 7J wheels so that required guard flaring. Of course there was some rust in the rear arches which needed to be cut out, so seeing as i was ending up painting half the car i figured i may as well do a complete closed door respray. Yeah, she ain't no show pony, the dents in the rear quarters don't even bother me much, i just want it all one colour so i have something to write down on the rego paper! Making the car fit the wheels is an arduous task and one that is taking a lot of time, effort and money but i know it will be worth it.

Then i upgraded the diff to a T series while the car was sitting there and purchased a TRD 2 way centre and 4.5:1 diff gears to suit, no point in putting in a revvy motor to have a crap ratio spoil the fun which leads me to....the JDM Bigport front cut i purchased also, 96kw MAP with T50, all stock but i have plans for later on down the track.

AJPS Coilovers found their way under the front end with RCA's, 8kg springs, Cusco Cambertops, KYB S/S shocks, Cusco strut brace, Cusco castor rod brace and some AE86 P/S steering arms for more lock. Also stepped up to 6KG rear springs to match with a Noltec Adjustable panhard rod, new trailing arm bushes, and a rebuild of the rear drums. Trialled a front swaybar but didn't really like the feel so replaced it with a stocker again, the rear 18mm bar remains. A Bride fixed back found its way inside also

While getting the rear guard work organised, i bought some fresh boots, SSR MK III (185/60 tyres):

F - 14x8J +-0
R - 14x8J -12

Will get some complete car pics up when the rear guards are done and the ride height adjusted, hopefully in 3 weeks time.

Recently while awaiting a hair cut, I was looking through the magazines on the coffee table in front of me. The magazine on top was none other than Hot4’s and Performance Cars. At the time my current daily transport was an RT142 corona in all its baby blue glory, it cost $500 and got me from A to B. In the bottom right of the cover there was a picture of a highly modified RT142, so, in humor, I picked up the magazine.

Opening the front cover I am bitch slapped in the face by some huge, gaudy chrome wheels, a double page advertisement for one of the many Sydney based ‘tyre stores’. No mention of tyres in the ad though, only in the business name with no endorsement from any actual tyre brands to be seen. Could it be that these names are just fronts for large scale importing of car de-valuers? Seem strange? Read on.

The background of the advertisement appears to resemble diamantes, under this advertising 48 months interest free no deposit finance – I think this is akin to buying a wedding ring from K-Mart, does 90% of the job, is 100% for show and costs half the price of the genuine article. There is a reason the rings from K-Mart are cheaper, the same reason the wheels are cheaper at XXX Tyres. The material quality is lower and the volume brought in is high, keeping the price point low for the average consumer. This is probably why the $500 RT142 runs such wheels.

I also feel so disheartened when I see late model Euro trash with 20inch ‘Boccochinis’ (they’re big and they’re cheesy) with Dingdong tyres. Why exactly anyone would want to remove the perfect fitting, staggered offset AMG wheels with Continental Z rated tyres from their SLK is far beyond me. What the fuck were they thinking – is it so necessary to try and look just that little bit richer by throwing some oversize, in your face chrome wheels just because they have some horrendous ‘Italian’ sounding title and the word luxury somewhere in the name. Da Vinci wheels. He would be turning in his grave if he knew something so un-aesthetic, unethical, mass produced and cheap was being associated with a product under his name. ‘The perfect merge of design and elegance’. Unless they class elegance as a four inch anal gape they must be severely mistaken.
Another advertiser proclaims “The real home of Zinik luxury alloy wheels”, I don’t know about you but that sounds like a whore house saying the real home of aids, because they sure as hell have a chance of killing someone with lower than OEM standards with both the wheel and tyre. It’s all part of the never ending chase of looking richer for less…..with interest free terms of course.

Then there is ozzy racing??? Well they aren’t even made in Australia, and it seems the company isn’t listed as even having anything more than a distributorship here. I have only heard of O.Z. racing wheels. Gracing rally cars and others for years, this brand seems remarkably similar, but the racing in the name also pulls at my strings as none of the wheels look like anything I have ever seen on a car that enters legitimate motorsport events. Strange?

Let me tell you the Chinese factories where 99% of these wheels hail from are far from luxurious. As long as the name sounds expensive and the price is low it is a sure fire way you will move a container load of these horrible wheels…In reality those feeling rich, will one day realise these wheels are fools gold, only fools believe they have actually improved their car. These tyre stores are only stocking narrow, high offset, no quality rubbish, its not what the public want, it is what is thrust in their face through advertisements, forcing them to look no further. Hey, it must be the best, the add said so. How the big name magazines such as the aforementioned Hot4's and Performance Cars can promote this junk and still look themselves in the eye is beyond me.

One guy even ruined a Mazda Rx-2, a revered classic, with some 18x8 XHPs with Nangkang rubber, apart from looking like shit, the car is sky high to fit the stupid wheels, for what reason I can’t explain, but I’d sure as hell take the factory wheels any day.

A typical element of these advertisements which I’m sure you have all seen, is some base model POS euro car or the other favourite the poor mans Rolls Royce (300c) with some shit chrome wheels which have been photo shopped on there by the workshop sweeper. Then the offers that are too good to refuse 18s from $999 with tyres. One particular statement that struck a bad chord with me in partuicular was the claim ‘Suits all makes and models’ – unsure exactly how they can offer this but I think it comes down to – at least 17inch to clear all brakes, +40 offset so it doesn’t hit the guard, but only 7 inch wide so it doesn’t hit the strut, no dish at all or pseudo dish so it can have some backspacing to fit all calipers, a centre bore big enough to fit a patrol and more stud holes than Swiss cheese. Add some generic spoke style (or something completely outrageous), some alloy remelt from your brothers Razor copy scooter you threw out last year, a quick chrome dip and then off to Sydney and the Gold Coast by the container load. It seems strange to me however that while being weak and small with zillions of holes drilled in them they are actually often as heavy as lead, or in the case of Falcons which they are so popular on, they are often heavier than the OEM steelies except if these china chromes were actually steel they might actually have some form of structural integrity. I wish I wasn’t shunned away from taking photos from the ‘warranty area’ at the back of a tyre store here in Adelaide. This wheel was snapped all spokes clean off at the hub, fair enough if it was in a crash, but closer inspection revealed no damage whatsoever to the lip or the rim, in fact the outer rim could be rolled straight. Scary stuff

Many players on the scene of making peoples cars look shit it’s a tough market to break into. What’s the best way to break into a new market when you are selling the same shit as company A. Company B the new player into town will offer a lower price to help cement its place in the market. With all these companies competing, the price point is squeezed lower and lower and that money has to go somewhere. Its not to the manufacturer, so the factory cuts costs in a number of ways that have been well documented by searching ‘quality fade’ and throwing ‘China’ in there to make it nice and scary.

Another popular tactic these cowboys use, after some Chinese tyres in the US market had some issues with some spectacular (read: death) results, manufacturers outsourcing to china had the wording on products changed to escape the negative stigma associated with Chinese manufacturing. Instead of boldly stating Made in China as 60% of retail items in the world are and giving people a heads up, they now marked "Made in PRC", although it may sound like a Pacific Road Coast, it is none other than the Peoples Republic of China. Now if any of you have tried you cannot boycott all Chinese products they have tapped into almost every market possible. But talk with your feet, support the brands that have done the R&D, have a history in motorsport regardless of country on manufacture. Don't believe the companys who copy the genuine article then call it Brand A 'Style' There is no style in this, there is a time and a place for Chinese parts, but they are not on your car.

A friend bought a metal lathe to make some products rather than buy the Chinese stuff, only to learn that the lathe its self was made in China. Obviously not everything out of china is complete rubbish, but one must be made aware that it is cheaper for a reason. Give your money to the companies that put the money back into motorsport and into developing to new products.

Speaking of motorsport, XXX tyres offers both ‘Bling’ wheels and ‘Race’ wheels. Giving the consumer a choice, surely. Wrong. I’m not sure where the inspiration for the ‘race’ wheels came from, unless of course they got mistaken thinking the Mardi Gras was some sort of a race, because they all look downright homosexual.

This plague is sweeping the nation faster than you can say – "your car looks downright homosexual with those wheels". These ‘trends’ need to stop, and these ‘importers’ don’t care how car looks as so often happens, its all about the bottom line. Wack shit sells so they'll make a dollar.

Ill finish with saying, Rodney Jane, surely you have made enough money off mums and dads Australia wide who you continue to fit stock size alloy wheels to with your name on them, please hang your head in shame and please get your dad to fix AIR. Thanks.
